I think an introduction is not needed. Specially considering the true nature of this forum...

Ah, I can see the true tolerance of a Supposedly "advanced" people can show, pathetic. Falklands? I said M A L V I N A S. If only made this forum for demonstrate the intolerance and incivilizatio and your very rudimentary socialization you can avoid the effort, For gorilas we have the zoo... And some foolish people speaks about us as "wild". Wild is the censorship in this forum... Is very pathetic the infantile reaction of the moderation applying filters for the word "M A L V I N A S" is just fear, xenophobia and stupidity, the reason for apply it...

Take lessons for civilization and moderation, my Kelper Friends, if really this forum is "malvinense" you need urgently this...

What is "malvinense"?

I've heard of Malvina and the like but not that word, I hope it isn't something rude, hateful or abusive that like that most Argentines use.

Hateful, abusive? another xenophobic islander? Show me that you are not hateful and abusive first before to qualify any post.

Hi, I write from Cipolletti, Rio Negro Province, Argentina.. I Hope to understand the lifestyle of the kelpers, and their general idea about our country and our peolpe.. no just a verbal fight

If UK have the shakespeare's lenguage, we have the cervantes´s lenguage, in both cases the claims for the rights about th islands can´t be a reason to attack a entire culture.

Greetings.

hello my name is stuart I have always had an interest in the falkland
islands because my father was a radio operator in 1948 with the royal navy.He later was based in antarctica for three years consectively because
the refuelling boat could not access in the 2nd year and so had to stay for
another year-and even that final departure was very traumatic for him in
the third year because the ice still had not retreated enough for safety.
I remember him telling me that he had some island named after himself
in antarctica called Randall rocks.I have googled it and there is a reference
to it but i wondered if  any of your membership knew anything about it.
I know it is not the most interesting piece of land in the world but i hope
you  can recognise my interest in this and all things falkland

Hi Stuart,

I happened to bump into a fellow named Jimmy Smith earlier today; he remembers this “incident” but he doesn’t recall any rocks/island being named after this guy (this doesn't mean that what your father told you is incorrect - just that he can't remember - it is a very long time ago...).

Anyway, Jimmy at the time was a seaman aboard the “first” John Biscoe (which was a wooden vessel) and they had tried to get to Stonington Island in Margaret Bay, but failed and got themselves 'iced in' for several days.

They tried the following year, but without success.

The third year, still ice; however enough clear water at the base to fly the guys out using a Norseman float plane to “Base F” (I think he might mean Argentine Island…?) to board the John Biscoe.

That Norseman aeroplane (according to Jimmy) was the very last Norseman ever to be built, and after its Antarctic adventures was used here in the Falklands.

I have also been in touch with the local British Antarctic Survey rep, and she has passed the request onto their Archives Dept. Hopefully they will be able to help with further info.

Randall Rocks

Just Received From British Antarctic Survey

Dear xxxx,

Hope all is going well at Stanley.

I believe Stuart’s father is Terence M Randall, listed as being radio/wireless operator at Stonington from 1947 to 1950.

The Antarctic Placenames Committee  deals with naming of features within the British Antarctic Territory:

http://www.antarctica.ac.uk//apc/

The BAT Gazetteer is online:

http://www.add.scar.org:8080/geoserver/gazetteer.jsp

There are Randall Rocks listed:

Latitude 68° 10' 59" S Longitude 67° 16' 59" W rising 18m above sea level off SW coast of Millerand Island, Marguerite Bay, Fallières Coast, were roughly surveyed by BGLE in 1936 (Stephenson, 1940, map facing p.232); resurveyed by FIDS from "Stonington Island", 1948-49, and named after Terence Mark Randall (b. 1928), FIDS radio operator, "Stonington Island", 1947-50 (APC, 1955, p.17; DCS 601 sheet 6866, 1955; BA chart 3580, 10.xii.1982).

Searching the archives database brings up reports written by Randall, he also features in a film and some photographs. He is also mentioned in some accounts by Fuchs, who was also at Stonington at this time. I am still in contact with one of the biologists that was at Stonington at the same time.

Info about the British Antarctic Survey Archives can be found at:

http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/archives

I also have an email address for further contact if you should wish.
I will not place this address here, but send me a pm and I'll then forward it to yo there.

Calling the Falkland Islands 'M a l v i n a s' is as stupid as the Spaniards calling the frontier between Gibraltar and Spain 'the fence'.
